Dynamic Lists

I am new to Visual Ajax, so I am just trying to figure out the capabilities.
In my application I want to create a dynamic list of groups, where the number of items in the list is determined from a database query?

I would presume that you need to use the API to do this, but I cannot find documentation on the API.

Is there an example of how to do this somewhere?
