CROSSTAB / PIVOT Table Example

Dear Forum,
Newbie question, sorry if this has already been covered but after some searching cant find it..
I want to use Sigma Grid to present and enable me to edit a 'spreadsheet' of numbers ( ie a grid ).
eg, Select row_name, row_id, columnn_name, column_id, grid_value, grid_id from table..
so the data appears in a 2d X by Y table.
The row_names/ids and columns names_id are not fixed and will depend on the data, so need for the component to setup the layout 'dynamically' at run time.
Is there an example anywhere showing how this can be done or any helper functions that build the columns auto-magically ?
I assume you could build up the rows and columns in code ? but wondered if there was anything really helpful.useful..
Many Thanks
G
